People’s Durham members with STAND with Dignity in New Orleans

People’s Durham has been in existence for three years.  Over those years, we have organized in a variety of contexts; led workshops and taught classes on politics, economics, history, and organizing skills; and built relationships with people fighting for change throughout the state and the South.  This year we have worked in four main areas.

  1. Building tenant organization in Precinct 13.  This has included organizing residents in the McDougald Terrace public housing community to lead redevelopment efforts in the neighborhood, a massive anti-eviction fight at Lincoln apartments, and voter engagement work across the precinct.
  2. Building a student club at Hillside High School through the Committee for Democratic Education.  This group has organized a march and activities aimed at ending violence and participated in voter engagement efforts.
  3. A Black Belt Freedom Summer trip that included political education and an organizers exchange with Malcolm X Grassroots Movement in Jackson, MS and STAND with Dignity from the New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice Organizing.

Tenant Organizing

McDougald Terrace
For the last year, People’s Durham has been working with residents of McDougald Terrace to identify neighborhood problems, support the development of leaders, and take action to make positive changes.  Residents building their own organization and power is essential now, as the city gears up to make big changes in the neighborhood.

Lincoln Apartments
At the end of September, residents of 150 units in the Lincoln Apartments were given 30 days’ notice that they were being evicted.  We have been working with community members to fight back against the injustice, extend the time that people are allowed to stay in their homes, and push for long-needed improvements to the facilities.

Committee for Democratic Education

This year CDE has shifted focus to build a student club at Hillside High School.  After years of organizing students, teachers, and parents around educational justice issues, we are working to support young people taking leadership in their schools and their communities.  We meet in Room 113 at Hillside every Tuesday.  Come join us to learn more about how change happens and start making it happen yourself.

Black Belt Freedom Summer

In the summer of 2012, we held our third annual Freedom Summer School.  This year rather than a typical summer school we took a trip to the Deep South visiting organizations doing similar work in both Jackson, MS and New Orleans.  In Jackson, People’s Durham members met with and helped canvass in support of mayoral candidate Chokwe Lumumba, current city council member, human rights attorney, and freedom fighter.  In New Orleans we met with public housing residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina still fighting for jobs and adequate housing.
